Orthopaedic acupuncture is a treatment approach to pain or muscular disfunction that is based on a thorough knowledge of neuromuscular anatomy, orthopedic testing, and kinesiology (the study of human movement). While decreasing or removing pain remains a goal, the orthopedic acupuncturist aims primarily to the restoration of function. Restoring function is accomplished through the release of inhibited muscles by the use of motor point acupuncture, dry needling, trigger point therapy, neuromuscular reeducation, and manual therapy.
As in traditional acupuncture, the orthopaedic acupuncturist utilizes acupuncture needles, electro-acupuncture, cupping and moxibustion. In addition, several diagnostic tools such as gait analysis, range of motion testing, postural assessment Muscle Energy Technique (MET), Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), Tui Na, and where allowed by scope of practice, Acupoint Injection therapy. Due to its high success ratio, orthopaedic acupuncture is the choice in sports medicine and currently in use by professional sports teams.
