When I first started practicing acupuncture, I often wondered why medical doctors would refer their patient with pain to physical therpists, or chiropractors, and very seldom to an acupuncturist. It must be due to insurance coverage, I thought. Or perhaps they think that this acupuncture method is no more than hocus-pocus, quackery, placebo effect and the like.
What is DaoNamics™?
DaoNamics™ is a fitness training procol which addresses internal and external components of fitness. It is ideal for those who seek personal training that departs from the “one size fits all” mentality commonly found in commercial gyms.
In essence, DaoNamics™ offers a methodical approach to conditioning the body through repetitive practice of fundamental patterns of movement, under resistance, that transfer to activities of daily living. Tasks such as walking, running, jumping, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, turning, standing, climbing and lunging. In other words, DaoNamics™ is about functional fitness and internal energetics.
Total fitness is generally classified in two branches: health and peformance. DaoNamics™ training places equal emphasis to both branches on table 1.
Performance fitness is linked to athletic activities such as football or track – it is sports oriented. DaoNamics™ seeks a cross-fertilization between sports training concepts between and activities of daily living.
How it work
DaoNamics™ exercise routines are based on
principles of biomechanics and kinesiology. Built on the understanding that the body moves through a system of levers, and the brain, which controls muscular movement, thinks in terms of whole motions, not on individual muscles.
To illustrate, consider the difference between the use of a leg extension machine to exercise the quadriceps, and the use of a step box. While both will strengthen the upper leg, the former does not transfer to functional strength because it is an isolation exercise and its primary motion is on one plane, sagittal.
The steps up exercise however, resembles
walking up or down stairs; getting in and out of car or getting out of tub. It includes
the use of assistant muscles and movement takes place on all planes of motion, including frontal and transverse movement of the hips, while moving the body in a sagittal plane (back and forth or up and down).
The value of a non-functional, “single-
joint” exercise such as on the leg extension machine, is that it plays a role in rehabilitation, and to strengthen a “weak link” in the kinetic chain. But it should be used only as an assistant training tool with the trainee returning to compound, or multi-joint exercises such as the squat, as soon as possible.
DaoNamics™ training is a blend of joint
mobility drills from the SpiralFlow Method, high intensity interval training (HIIT), bodyweight calisthenics, kettlebell practice and barbell strength training. The program includes Chinese internal arts such as Qi Gong and Tai Chi.
Only private sessions are offered to ensure total attention to detail, form, and instruction.
