To Walk Or Not To Walk

image I love St. Augustine.. Although We’ve only been here for six years, I feel like we’ve lived here forever. In fact, our little Ancient City is sister city to a lovely place in my country, Cartagena, Colombia.
There’s so much to appreciate about this place.

But I do have one serious complaint. Drivers in St. Aug. are amongst the most inconsiderate drivers of any city I’ve ever lived in. This includes Chicago, Vegas, Wilmington, Miami, St. Pete, Springfield, MO.

This latest incident On The Record, demonstrates my point. A blind athlete from Philadelphia was killed by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday morning. It is only by the grace of G_d that this story is not a daily headline on our local paper.

I love to walk. The father of Western Medicine the Greek physician Hippocrates, said that walking was man’s best medicine. I often walk to my office. But the truth is that every time I take a walk, I end up very pissed off at the lack of courtesy most drivers have towards pedestrians.. At first I thought it was racial matter. But after much observation, I’ve come to the conclusion that it is not a matter of disdain towards to those off color, but it is ignorance, arrogance and just plain lack of respect for those walking around our town.

The city of St. Augustine, has recently passed a law against panhandlers in an effort to present a pretty face to our tourists. Like sweeping our dirt under the rug. But instead of targeting our homeless residents, how about enforcing laws that punish the actions of those megalomaniacs behind the wheel?

Unless some action is taken, walking in St. Augustine can be hazardous to your health.
